El Torcal and Fuente de Piedra
The area surrounding Antequera contains places of unsuspected beauty. El torcal, just 13 km away along a surfaced road, is a unique natural beauty spot which may be visited all year round. It is formed by rocks which have been shaped by the force of the wind, creating bridges and passageways, phantasmagoric figures, hiding places and streets. It is a world apart in which the beauty of the rocks is combined with an equally unique fauna and flora.
The Fuente de Piedra Lake, very near to the 92 expressway, is the main lake, but by no means the only one in the proximity of Antequera. It is one of the few refuges existing in Europe for the pink flamingo, in the nesting season of 1988, 9.350 young were recorded. In season, the birds may be observed from places near to the lake specifically designed for the purpose.
Between Antequera and the capital of the province, linked by motorway, is situated the district of Montes de Malaga, an area of sweet wines and the typical verdiales fiestas, as well as the wooded valleys with gentle slopes dotted with country houses and several camping areas.
Finally, to the southwest of the town of Antequera is the
Desfile of Los Gaitanes, another place of striking beauty.
The unique El Chorro Goge, as the protected beauty spot is
popularly known, was formed over thousands of years by the
action of the Guadalhorce River. The so called Caminito del
Rey (King's Pathway) allows the traveller to view the gorge.
There are also several reservoirs nearby, which blend in perfectly
with their surroundings.
