Bicycle Route around the Parks
DURATION: 2 hours approx.
DISTANCE: 5 km.
DIFFICULTY: Low.
The meeting place will be the Plaza de las Canteras.
When you leave this plaza (square), turns towards
the traffic lights and headdown the Av. Mª Auxiliadora
until you reach a gas station, where you should turn
to the left.
Once you arrive at a roundabout with a fountain, you
have the opportunity to visit the Atlantico Park,
which can be seen on the left, bordering the sea.
This park is one of the most attractive thanks to
its privileged location close to the sea and surrounded
by pine trees. It was inaugurated in 1991.
Once you have visited this park, it is back in the
saddle again. At the roundabout, take the Avenida
de Diputación, situated on the left. After
riding for about 500 metres, you should see the "Celestino
Mutis" Botanical Gardens, which houses a large
numbre of indigenous species catalogued and arranged
by area. It is also a natural refuge of the chamaleon,
a species in danger of extinction, Rota is one of
the few places where it can still be found.
You should continue down the Avenida de la Diputación
until you have arrive at an extensive area of pine
trees that forms part of the Almadraba National Park.
This is a very important park form a geological and
ecological point of view as it is formed of pine trees
and dunes in an ecosystem that is rapidly diminishing.
The area is perfect to relax, have a drink or head
down to the beach to hace a refreshing dip. As you
leave the park you should see the Feria Grounds just
opposite, site of the Spring Feria and also where
Rota's oldest park can be found: "Felix Rodriguez
de la Fuente". This park was inaugurated in 1982
and boasts a beautiful duck pond and children's play
area.
Back on the road again, you should leave the park.
Once you have pedalled about 3 km., you should see
a hospital on the right. At this point you should
turn left to arrive at the Mayeto Park. This park
is dedicated to the Rota farmers, called "Mayeto".
Inside you will find a small museum of ancient tools,
most of which are scattered around grounds of the
park.
This park is the last stopping on the list. You can
now head back down to the Avenida MªAuxiliadora
to get back to the starting point in the Plaza de
las Canteras.
