Festivals
Sanlúcar de Barrameda has many and various enjoyable
which are well attended and participated in by the
public. Numerous circumstances, such as the renowed
sociability of our inhabitants, greatly influenced
by our wonderful southern climate, and the influx
of multiple cultural experiences due to Sanlúcar's
maritime character, have bought these activities into
being over the years. In short, these are unique popular
festivals which the locals are always proud to share
with visitors.
Carnival from 28th february to 15th march
Of note is a lively, let it all hang out cavalcade
of floats which ends in a huge public party in the
town square, La Plaza de Cabildo.
Holy Week from 4th to 11th april
The moving baroque imagenry, together with the rich
artistic and decorative patrimony of the ancient Brotherhoods
of Sanlúcar, as well as the bewitching surroundings
which the town lends the processions, are the principal
ingredients of the Week of the Passion in Sanlúcar.
Declared a festival of national tourist interest in
Andalusia.
The Manzanilla Fair
Flamenco music, a friendly welcome for visitors and
the special cuisine, with its fried fish and sea food,
are the principal hallmarks of this popular fiesta.
Manzanilla, our local wine, is the hostess of this
intimate festival, with its unique location on the
Guadalquivir river mouth.
Rocio Pilgrimage
After the traditional procession by the Brotherhood
of Sanlúcar, the festive spirit grips the popular
Bajo de Guía district while the Brotherhoods
of the province of Cádiz wait their turns to
cross the Guadalquivir river on their pilgrimage to
Rocío.
The Patroness Festival
The image of Our Lady of Charity, Patroness of Sanlúcar,
is taken in solemn procession through the streets
of Sanlúcar. At the Cardinal points of the
route She marches over rich, colourful, mosaic carpets
made by hundreds of local children, using coloured
salt crystals, on the ve of the procession.
The "Tapa" Fair
An excellent opportunity to try the different specialities
of the rich and varied cuisine of Sanlúcar,
in which one also gets to enjoy the agreeable sociable
ambience which constitutes the Tapa tradition.
