The high Alpujarra: from Lanjarón to Laroles
The Alpujarra is an area where time seems to stand still.
It has picturesque villages perched on mountain slopes, a
popular architecture inherited Muslim dwellers, landscapes
of undescribable beauty, Moorish irrigation canals and crops
grown on terraces. The people there are welcoming and modest,
and the Sierra Nevada people is always in the background.
The last redoubt of the moriscos from Granada is living proof
of the symbiosis between man and the environment reached by
the Moorish culture of Al-Andalus.
A tour of the most authentic villages and lanscape takes us
like the Barranco del Poqueira, La Tahá, Trevélez
or Válor. It goes from Lanjarón to Laroles,
on the border with the province of Almería.
Lanjarón, the town of healthy waters, has interesting
places such as the Barrio Hondillo, the spa, the Islamic castle
and the hermitage of San Sebastián.
In Soportújar it is a surpring to see its abundant
examples of the typical architecture of Alpujarra, steep streets
and qhite houses.
Pampaneira is a beautiful example of the popular architecture
of the area. There is a cratf market there in weekends.
The Barranco del Poqueira, is one of the most beautiful
places the Alpujarra, and comprises the villages of Pampaneira,
Bubión and Capileira.
In Capileira it is very interesting to visit the Museum
of Popular Art and Traditions of the area and the church.
Bubión is the smallest village in the Poqueira
area. Its mudéjar church preserves the remains of the Nasrid
tower.
