Torremolinos and the Costa del Sol were born in the late 1950 as a favourite place as a tourist destination. La Carihuela, a village of fishermen, was where both Salvador Dali and Luis Cernuda chose the beach to go swimming. During those years, Torremolinos was a distinctive place and its touristic impulse arose with the birth of a hotel, the Hotel Pez Espada, on the 31st of May 1959, a luxury tourism began to set their eyes on Torremolinos to spend their holidays.

The hotels in Torremolinos really do mark the growth of this municipality. Currently, the hotel Pez Espada is a family accommodation, a hotel that in the past had celebrity guests such as Ingrid Bergman, Frank Sinatra, Charlton Heston, Orson Welles, Anthony Quinn, Elisabeth Taylor, Ava Gadner or Sofia Loren. Famous celebrities that wouldn’t stop arriving at the Torremolinos beaches.

Other hotels that lodged celebrities like Judy Garland (main character of The Wizard of Oz) was the Hotel Melia, where the actress stayed with her fifth husband. Today the hotel has been knocked down, awaiting for a building project of a 5-star hotel.

In Torremolinos, Arab sheiks and magnates from other countries also stayed there, but later on the Tourism boom of Marbella arrived and Torremolinos began to turn into a more familiar destination.
