Processions of Virgen del Carmen
When: July 16
Where: In all the coastal cities of Malaga
Description: Virgen del Carmen is a seafaring tradition that lives with great fervour and devotion in the province of Malaga, from Nerja to Manilva, in many coastal towns hosting major maritime processions on the occasion of the feast of Carmen. The image is transferred from their churches to the port or the beach where it is shipped to tour the coast under the protection of fishermen and accompanied by decorated boats and packed with worshipers.
Outstanding are the processions in Torre del Mar, along the beaches of the fishermen districts of El Palo, Pedregalejo and Huelin in Malaga city, and the popular fishermen district La Carihuela in Torremolinos, as well as in Estepona where the Virgen del Carmen is the local Patron saint and where the maritime procession receives a privileged attention. In addition to decorating the boats, the procession is accompanied by fireworks giving this old tradition a special charm. Highly recommended.
