For those who want to visit Marbella on the Costa del Sol, for example now during Easter, here are some suggestions for excursions and trips around Marbella to close-by villages and natural areas which are definitely worth a visit:
Marbella is known as a famous holiday resort in the Costa del Sol, due to the luxury that has always surrounded it, associated with the idea of beaches, relaxation, golf courses, great night-life, beautiful people… indeed it is like this, but we discover you some interesting sites in its surroundings, which are not very touristy and well worth visiting.
In Marbella you can enjoy its historic centre, the low white houses decorated with flowers, many beautiful typically Andalusian corners; make a stop at the Plaza de los Naranjos to recover from the walk, while you are surrounded by the scent of orange blossoms so characteristic of the square in spring and enjoy a refreshing drink.
Regarding the surroundings we are going to highlight some enjoyable day trips around Marbella:
Guadalhorce valley: Area of small villages with white houses mixed with orchards, where we highlight some picturesque municipalities as Pizarra or Cartama where you can buy forge items. You should not miss the Gaitanes Gorge (3 km from Alora), where you can see the river Guadalhorce immersing in nature; for the more adventurous there are also climbing areas. We recommend it even to the least lovers of the countryside, as the scenery is outstanding.
Sierra de las Nieves mountain ranges: This is a Natural Park which borders the Guadalhorce valley, the Serrania of Ronda and the Costa del Sol. Situated close to Marbella, this natural park is perfect for those who still appreciate the perfect balance between man and nature, where you can find also charming little mountain villages.
Serrania de Ronda: The town of Ronda is popularly known for its Bullfights and all the festive atmosphere it entails, but Ronda itself is a place to stroll and enjoy because it is built on the edge of a spectacular gorge. Do not miss the famous New Bridge over the river. In the mountains of Ronda there are many white villages; villages which are characterized by the white colour of their houses, their slopes and their fantastic views over the surrounding countryside.
For those who cannot resist spending part of the day lying on the beach we suggest some lovely trips around Marbella that can be done in half a day; it’s not all beach and Puerto Banus!
Casares: This small town is part of the Serrania de Ronda but is situated close to the coast and just a 40 minutes´ drive from Marbella. Outstanding is its Moorish castle from the 13th century. Who wants to discover beautiful rural roads may choose to return to the coast by the MA-8300.
Benahavis: Very close to Marbella we can enjoy a walk through another typical white village which combines some of the influence of the Costa del Sol, for instance the exclusive “La Quinta” with a hotel and luxury villas surrounded by greenery and golf courses. In Benahavis you can visit the 10th century castle, the Palace and the churches. Very popular is the August fair and as well the Easter processions.
We hope this list of different municipalities will help you to enjoy more of this charming city and its surroundings; and of course we hope you like them, as they are nice day trips around Marbella to do with friends, family or your partner!
