Located in the province of Almeria, Sierra de Gador is situated south of Sierra Nevada and has remains of old lead and mainly silver mines that were abandoned in the mid-twentieth century; an intense mining activity that caused much of this mountain area to be quite deforested since wood was used as fuel.
Hiking in Sierra de Gador
There are many hiking trails which show you some stunning views of the Gulf of Almeria, Cabo de Gata and other places that are well worth seeing.
Enix Route
In Enix you can enjoy a rich cuisine before or after performing the path that starts from the village, a journey with beautiful views of western Almeria, Roquetas de Mar or Cabo de Gata which ends with a steep descent known as Camino Romano, a trail that connected the town with the capital.
This linear route of medium difficulty begins or ends in Almeria and is just under 16 kilometres; will take approximately 5 hours to complete it.
El Chaparral hiking trail
Along this path you can know the village Fondon and Fuente Victoria before ascending Sierra de Gador; the tour has lovely views of Sierra Nevada.
LThe total distance of this linear path is about 18 kilometres which can be covered in about 6 hours.
Los Pradillos hiking trail
This easy route takes you through a beautiful forest path from where can be seen Sierra Nevada and the Alpujarras in the distance.
This trail starts at kilometre 24 of the freeway towards Alcolea and Laujar de Andarax after passing through Berja.
The distance is 15 kilometres round trip, a distance that can be covered in about 4 hours due to its little difficulty.
Route los Lavadero from Berja
Get to know the old network of trails that were used by the workers of the old mines along 16 kilometres in just under 6 hours including a break.
The difficulty of the route is medium-high due to the steep slope at the beginning, a path that begins in the upper part of the recreation area Castala which is accessed from the town Berja, from where we go to the hamlet Castala from where we access recreational area.
The trail is easy to follow; just follow the signposting of the path 337 at each crossing you encounter.
The best route to Sierra de Gador and Berja is on the A-7 along the coast passing through Motril and Adra.
