The hill Cerro de Almirez is accessible from several places; one of them is Laujar de Andarax, an important mining town during the Roman period but which reached its zenith during the Arab rule.
Andarax, considered the capital of the Alpujarra of Almeria is located on the south side of Sierra Nevada and has two main hiking trails:
Route Aguadero
From the recreational area goes this path towards the source of the river Andarax on a journey that will reward you with beautiful views.
Route of the hydropower station
Easy route with spectacular scenery passing by a bridge and several tunnels.
Route to Cerro de Almirez
This route which starts from the recreational area of El Nacimiento is ideal to make it in two days; one for the nearly 21 km ascend and the other day for the descend.
Before taking any of the routes out of town, you can visit any of the major sights:
Cathedral of the Alpujarra
Built on an ancient mosque where were executed many Muslims by Christians after the conquest.
Bridge Puente de los Moros
Arabic Aqueduct in perfect condition but with difficult access.
Alcazaba
The Alcazaba of Laujar located in the highest part of the town is of cultural Interest and was built as a defensive building; after the Christian conquest the fortress was partially destroyed.
Public fountains
There are a variety of public sources steeped in history, some built during Muslim rule but most were built after the Christian conquest.
Bullring
The bullring in Laujar de Andarax is the oldest in the province of Almeria.
Mining remains
Old mines show the rich mining history of the town with some of its intact facilities.
Recreational area of El Nacimiento
Picnic area along the banks of the river Andarax and from where start some interesting routes.
Take the highway to Nerja and Almuñecar, without leaving the A-7 passing the turnoff to Motril towards Granada; take the detour east on the A-346 that goes directly to Laujar de Andarax on the south side of Sierra Nevada National Park.
