Subbetica water route — Iznajar, Rute and the Genil
This side of the Sierras Subbeticas follows water rather than cliff towns. Rute sits under its own sierra. Iznajar stands on a hill almost ringed by the Genil reservoir. Downstream you pick up Encinas Reales, Benameji and Palenciana. From the Costa del Sol the usual road is the A-45 toward Antequera, then the lanes along the dam.
Iznajar and Rute are the day. The climb toward La Tinosa starts from the Rute paths, along the Rio de la Hoz and the Horconera ridge. The smaller villages on the N-331 are short stops if you are already on that road. Zuheros and Priego are on the northeast route. Montilla and Cabra are on the western route. Park walks and food sit on the overview.
*Water sports on the reservoir depend on the season and the water level. La Tinosa is a walk, not a drive.

Iznajar
The road along the dam is the approach most people like. The village sits at about 530 metres on a hill the water almost surrounds. The castle is an old Arab fortress at the top of the Cuesta de los Barrancos; next to it is the sixteenth-century church of Santiago. From that height the reservoir looks like a wide river that forgot to move. Pines stand on some of the banks. When the level allows, this is where you swim, fish or take a small boat. The village streets are the other half of the stop. Do not treat the dam as a viewpoint you photograph without leaving the car.
Rute
Rute gives its name to the sierra above it. Plaza del Carmen is the square to start from. Santa Catalina holds a seventeenth-century canvas and an eighteenth-century monstrance. The town is also known for aniseed spirit and for nougat at Christmas; those shops are in the streets, not in the park. Walks leave along the Rio de la Hoz toward Horconera and La Tinosa. That climb is a full outing with proper shoes. It is the mountain half of this route, not an extra after the reservoir swim.
Encinas Reales, Benameji and Palenciana
Encinas Reales sits on the N-331. The late-eighteenth-century church of Nuestra Senora de la Expectacion stands over the white houses. The hermitage of Jesus de las Penas by the road shows Seville baroque on a small scale. There are archaeological sites in the fields; they are not a visitor centre you plan a morning around.
The bridge over the Genil brings you into Benameji. The village mixes a Renaissance street front with ordinary white houses. On a hill nearby are walls and towers from a tenth-century fortress. The parish of the Inmaculada and the hermitages of Nuestra Senora de la Cabeza and Jesus del Alto sit in the same small area. The river here is used for rafting when the flow allows; that is seasonal, not a standing offer at the castle.
Palenciana is the last halt on this line, close to the Genil. A wooded bridge on the outskirts is the picnic stop. Water sports, if they run, use the same river corridor as Iznajar, not a second lake.
How to follow this route from Malaga
Iznajar is the closest of these places to Antequera. A hire car from Malaga Airport covers the dam, Rute and the Genil villages in one long day if you skip La Tinosa. A private transfer can take you to a hotel in Iznajar or Lucena; the reservoir shore and the mountain path still need a car.

From Malaga Airport take the A-45 toward Antequera, then the roads to Iznajar and Rute. Benameji and Palenciana sit on the Genil west of the dam. Leave Zuheros and Montilla for another day.

Other options
Trains from Malaga reach Antequera and Cordoba. Buses from those towns serve Lucena and, on some timetables, Iznajar and Rute. There is no useful station on the dam. Check the last bus back before you plan a swim.
From Fuengirola, Torremolinos or Marbella go into Malaga for the long-distance services, or drive the A-45. Benameji is on the N-331 corridor and is easier by car than by a chain of local buses. La Tinosa has no public transport to the path head.
Practical tips
- Do the village and the shore at Iznajar before you decide on a boat. The water level changes.
- La Tinosa from Rute is a mountain walk. Do not add it after a long drive from the coast.
- Rute’s aniseed and nougat shops are in town. They are not a reason to skip the reservoir.
- Rafting at Benameji is seasonal. Ask locally; do not assume a desk by the bridge.
- This route and the northeast cliff towns are two different days.
