The Water Route

The Water Route takes you through some of the most picturesque villages and natural landscapes in the Subbetic Mountains National Park. This route is perfect for those who love nature, history, and water activities.

Rute

The route starts in Rute, situated at the foot of the Sierra to which it gives its name. The Plaza del Carmen stands out for its beauty. The Iglesia Parroquial de Santa Catalina houses a 17th-century canvas and a Monstrance from the 18th century. It is worth taking a walk along the Río de la Hoz along the paths which lead through the Sierras de Rute and the la Horconera, up to the 1570 metre high Pico de la Tiñosa.

Iznájar

An attractive road leading alongside the edge of a reservoir leads to Iznájar, a fine, spectacular village situated on a 533 metre hilltop, and surrounded by the waters of the River Genil. Climbing the Cuesta de los Barrancos leads to the Castillo, a one-time Arab fortress, and to the Iglesia Parroquial de Santiago, a clearly Renaissance 16th century church. From this point a fine panorama taking in over 137 square kilometres can be observed. Of special mention is the Genil River Reservoir at Iznájar, a place of great natural beauty whose banks are bordered with pine woods. This is the ideal place for relaxing or practising water sports.

Encinas Reales

Encinas Reales is a small village along the N-331 main road. The Neo-Classical Iglesia de Nuestra Señora de la Expectación (18th century) rises above the white of the houses. On the roadside is the Ermita de Nuestro Padre Jesús de las Penas. The façade as well as the interior are attractive constructions with clear Seville Baroque influences. There are a number of archaeological sites in the area which bear witness to the ancient nature of the settlements of the area.

Benamejí

The bridge over the River Genil leads to Benamejí, with its representative Renaissance architecture mixing with the popular architecture of the village houses. The remains of the walls and some towers of the 10th century Arab Castillo can be visited on a nearby hilltop. The religious contribution to architecture is made up of the Iglesia Parroquial de la Inmaculada, the Ermitas de Nuestra Señora de la Cabeza and la de Jesús del Alto o de Gracia.

Palenciana

On the outskirts of Palenciana, close to the River Genil, a wooded bridge can be visited. This area offers a peaceful retreat and a chance to enjoy the natural beauty of the region and practice some water sports
