Rota has been since prehistoric times a crossing point of different cultures and civilizations. There have been found remains of settlements of the civilization of Tartessos who called the place "Asta Regia"; this name remained until the arrival of the Romans who baptized the city "Speculum Rotae".
Through Rota also passed the Arab civilization who named the city Rabeta Ruta and the Christian civilization named it "Rotta", hence its current name.
