The first hotels in Marbella appeared in the early 20th century, like ‘El Comercial’ (opened in 1918) and the Hotel Miramar (1934). Others used older buildings like the San Luis Fort, built during the 17th century, where today the Hotel El Fuerte Marbella is found.
It was as from the second world war when they distributed a strong propaganda of the municipality amongst the rich and famous from back then, and the luxurious tourism began with resorts like “El Rodeo” and “Marbella Club” built in 1954 as from the purchase of the Santa Margarita plot of land by a prince and a German-Spanish real estate promoter. The timid paces of these were later on followed by the richest and most powerful families in the world and in Spain: Bismark, Rothschild, Marquis of Salamanca...turning Marbella into one of the hottest places for the international jet set.
Nowadays, Marbella is not only reserved for the wealthy, there are prices to suit all budgets and although it’s still an important meeting point amongst the rich and famous, there are accessible offers for the rest of the mortals...however, it is highly recommendable to search for these offers with plenty of time ahead.
