Malaga’s Main Roads & Motorways

The province has an excellent modern road network. Here are the most important routes you will see on the map, with practical information about tolls and speed cameras.

AP-7 Costa del Sol motorway

AP-7 Mediterranean Motorway (Costa del Sol)

The main toll motorway running from Malaga to Estepona (and on to Algeciras). Fast, modern and with beautiful sea views. Tolls apply (approx. €5.50 Málaga–Marbella normal season; higher in summer). Many fixed and section speed cameras – especially around Rincón de la Victoria, Torremolinos and Fuengirola.

A7 VS AP-7
Scenic A-7 coastal road

A-7 Free Coastal Route (parallel to AP-7)

The free alternative to the AP-7. Slower but much more scenic, passing through coastal villages and offering direct beach access. Heavier traffic in summer and more radars in built-up areas.

Best Scenic Routes

AP-46 Guadalmedina Motorway (Las Pedrizas)

The inland toll motorway linking Malaga with Antequera, Casabermeja and Almogía. Very useful for drivers coming from Córdoba, Seville or heading to the airport from the north. Short toll section with fewer radars than the coastal routes.

A-45 Malaga–Cordoba Motorway

The main free inland motorway. Passes the Pantano del Agujero reservoir, Casabermeja, Colmenar and Antequera. Several fixed and section speed cameras, especially around the Las Pedrizas pass and tunnels.

Important driving tips:
• Tolls on AP-7 and AP-46 are paid at booths or with Via-T (recommended for frequent drivers – discounts available).
• Speed cameras are common on the A-7 (especially Rincón de la Victoria, Torremolinos and Marbella areas) and A-45 (Las Pedrizas tunnels). Mobile radars are frequent on secondary roads.
• Mountain roads (A-397 to Ronda, A-366 through the Axarquia) are winding – reduce speed and enjoy the views safely.
