The village of El Rocio, where is celebrated the famous Pilgrimage of El Rocio characterizes Almonte, a municipality of Huelva where gather thousands of pilgrims.
The village of El Rocio is located only 15 kilometres from the beach Matalascañas; in this village is located the chapel of Virgen del Rocio and throughout the year many visitors come to visit the place, especially during the celebration of the already named Rocio Pilgrimage.
This religious festival known throughout the Spanish territory can be explored on foot, horseback or in wagons; a route that passes through the Doñana Natural Park to the shrine of the Virgin, which is taken in procession to the village.
The first record we have of this place of worship dates back to the mid-fourteenth century, a cult that has evolved over centuries now becoming an important mass celebration in Andalusia.
If you decide to participate you have to keep in mind that you should go prepared and fit for a few days without the daily luxuries and bring appropriate and comfortable clothing.
