Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja – Protected Natural Area of Peridotite and Spanish Fir
Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja is a Protected Natural Area (Paraje Natural) covering 1,236 hectares in the southwest of Malaga province, between the towns of Estepona, Genalguacil and Casares. It is renowned for its exceptional geology, formed mainly of peridotite – an ultramafic rock from the Earth’s mantle that is rich in platinum and other minerals, giving the landscape its distinctive reddish colour.
From its peaks, especially Pico Los Reales (1,452 m), you can enjoy some of the finest panoramic views over the western Costa del Sol. On clear days it is possible to see Estepona, the Strait of Gibraltar and even the Rif Mountains in North Africa. This area also protects one of the few Spanish fir forests in the world that grow directly on peridotite soil.
Biodiversity
The special conditions of the peridotite soil, the mild climate and the rainfall patterns in this area allow for highly specialised flora. The most remarkable element is the Spanish fir (Abies pinsapo), a relict species from the Tertiary period that only survives in a few mountain ranges in Malaga and Cadiz. Los Reales contains an important Spanish fir forest adapted to this unusual soil type – something very rare.
Besides the Spanish firs, numerous plant species thrive here that are adapted to nutrient-poor but metal-rich soils, creating a habitat with exceptionally high biodiversity and several endemic species. The fauna includes roe deer – characteristic of the mountains of Malaga and Cadiz – Iberian ibex, wildcat and a notable variety of birds of prey. The area is designated as a Special Protection Area for Birds (ZEPA).
Reptiles and amphibians such as salamanders, toads and freshwater turtles can also be observed. The unique combination of geology and biodiversity makes Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja a site of great natural and scientific interest.

How to Get to Los Reales de Sierra Bermeja
The main access is via the winding MA-557 road from Estepona towards Genalguacil. About half an hour after leaving Estepona you will reach the Peñas Blancas junction. Turn left here following the signs for “Los Reales”. The road is winding and offers several beautiful viewpoints before reaching the car park and the start of the trails.
