What is a Chiringuito?
Probably we all know that a chiringuito is a small place located on the beach where you can have a drink and where they usually serve fish and seafood too.
But what perhaps not many of us knew is that the chiringuito is a purely Malaga invention. Yes it is.
The first Chiringuito in Spain was born in 1882 in Malaga, in the fishermen’s neighbourhood of El Palo, which even today is a reference point among the locals for the best Chiringuitos where to eat “pescaito”(fried fish).

But it wasn’t called that until…
It´s name as such was not cradled until 1913 by a journalist from Madrid who named a small beach bar in Sitges, Barcelona, as a tribute to his visits to Cuba.

A Chiringuito (Beach Bar) is usually a simple restaurant equipped simply and without great luxuries in decoration or furniture, a few tables and chairs, often on the sand of the beach, where diners can expect fresh seafood.
A typical element that is not missing in any real Chiringuito is a boat, made of wood or metal, where the famous Sardine Spits are grilled. The aroma of these fish roasting slowly is typical and will make your mouth water. And it is an infallible indicator that you are in the approach of a real Chiringuito.
A Beach Club will get noticed first by sight instead of aroma. It’s a really cool place. With boho, Balinese or Ibizan decoration, these places are proliferating all over the coast and attracting a more international audience.
