San Juan Celebration Coastal municipalities

The night of San Juan is one of the most popular and celebrated (and multitudinous) in Malaga. Thousands of people meet on the beaches until the early hours of the morning to welcome the summer where fire and water become the main elements of the most magical night of the year. A very typical ritual is to take a midnight dip to bring good luck.
Just go to your nearest beach and immerse yourself in the celebration. On the most popular beaches there are also live concerts and fireworks at midnight. San Juan is the big kick-off for summer on the Costa del Sol, don’t miss it!
- When: 23rd June
Interesting
It was traditionally celebrated with the arrival of the summer solstice on 21 June. It was a festival of sun worship in which rituals around fire and water played a very important role as purifying elements: they warded off bad omens and attracted good wishes.
Christianity eventually moved the feast to 23 June, coinciding with the date of the birth of St John the Baptist, according to the Bible.
