The are covered by the designation of origin "Malaga" consists of land in 51 municipalities of the province of Malaga. It could be said that practically the whole province makes wine. A tour of wine from Malaga should be divided in three areas: one coastal area to the north of Malaga itself, another coastal area to the south reaching as far as Estepona, and an inland area going as far the banks of the Genil river.
At the present, 1,000 hectares are devoted to vineyards.
The protected wines are made exclusively from grape of "Pedro Ximénez" and "Moscatel" varieties.
They are typically Mediterranean wines, sweet and velvety and they are among the oldest of which there is record.
In ancient times, Malaga was already famous for its wines.
