Just 20 kilometres from the city of Granada, we find the Natural Park of Sierra de Huétor and its visitor centre 'Puerto Lobo', the birthplace of the River Darro, which was so important during the Arab rule.
The Natural Park of Sierra de Huétor has numerous trails to explore and enjoy the surrounding nature, as well as camping areas.
In the Natural Park, we can still feel the essence of its Arab past in the villages situated within its boundaries, such as Diezma, Huétor Santillán, Nívar, Víznar, Alfacar, Beas de Granada, and Cogollos de la Vega. This Arab legacy includes remains of irrigation ditches and the recommended Arab baths of Cogollos de la Vega.
Diezma is the perfect place to view Sierra Nevada, ideal for taking pictures of the mountains and admiring the different species of birds that inhabit the area.
We also recommend the following places in Sierra de Huétor:
Along an easy trail from the forest track leading to Fuente de la Teja, we arrive at the source of the River Darro, springing from rock cavities among the mountains of the Natural Park of Sierra de Huétor.
The River Darro was closely linked to the Alhambra, the walled city that was nourished by its waters.
This summer residence was built in the late eighteenth century by the Archbishop of Granada. A walk through this place will offer views of gardens, murals, frescoes, and gates from that epoch.
The popular bread of Alfacar and Víznar (you cannot leave without trying it) has its origin in the old mills producing flour using the ditch carrying water to Albaicín.
You can currently follow the path that runs along the canal to explore the different mills and monuments of the village.
Here are the different marked trails found in the Sierra de Huétor:
Beautiful scenery from a path that leads to the old canal that supplied water to the Albaicín in the past.
This long trail offers beautiful views of the Cerro del Agua and the Cerro de las Calaveras until we reach the source of the River Darro.
Nice panoramic views of Sierra Nevada from a viewpoint that we reach after passing the hilltop, where we find the remains of a Civil War trench.
This path starts at the visitors centre and leads to the summit of Collado de Víznar, from where we can enjoy beautiful views of Granada and Sierra Nevada.
This trail leads to the Cueva del Agua and offers beautiful views of the Sierra Nevada.
We follow the A-92 that crosses the Natural Park and passes through Puerto de la Mora at 1380 metres above sea level. To get to the visitors centre of Puerto Lobo, we can access it from Víznar or Alfacar.
If you choose to rent a car in Malaga, the route to follow is taking the A-7 and AP-46 towards Granada until it joins the A-92 before reaching Loja. We follow the A-92 to the exit of Alfacar or Víznar, from where we head to the visitors centre of the Natural Park.
