13 things to do on Valentine’s Day in Malaga

Honestly, spending Valentine’s Day in Malaga is a safe bet.

While the rest of Europe is still under the cold hand of winter, here in Malaga in February the almond trees are already in bloom.

Although February is usually the coldest month on the Costa del Sol, on a sunny day – which is usually the norm here – we can reach a temperature of 20ºC.

For this reason and much more that we will tell you below, Malaga is a top-quality destination to spend a few romantic days here with your partner.

If you like to celebrate this date with your partner, and whether you are a forward-thinking person who has already made plans, or if you are one of those who leave everything to the last minute, here are some attractive ideas for spending Valentine’s Day in Malaga.

What is Valentine’s Day and why do we celebrate it?

While we’re on the subject, we thought it would be quite interesting to do some research on the history of this popular custom. Would you like to join us on a little journey through history?

It was in Rome, in the 3rd century, when Christianity was not yet popular, that a pagan emperor ruled and forbade his soldiers to marry, since the only thing that should be important to them was the Roman Empire. But there was a Christian priest, Valentine, who married them in secret. He was discovered, imprisoned and executed on February 14th.

But it was not until 200 years later, when Rome was already in the hands of the Catholic Church, that Valentine’s idea was rescued, since at that time pagan rites were still celebrated, such as that pagan fertility rite that took place in February and which was given a new (Christian) name of St. Valentine.

Very close to the village you can visit the Peña de los Enamorados, one of the most attractive natural monuments in the region.

This rock is the scene of a very popular legend in Andalusia: During the Christian conquest of Al-Andalus, two lovers fled. He was a Christian and she was an Arab. A few hours after escaping, they found themselves cornered by the siege of the Christian troops and the battalion that the girl’s father sent in search of them. The two lovers climbed to the top of the rock and threw themselves into the void. They preferred death to separation.
