Benalup in Cadiz

Benalup-Casas Viejas is an inland municipality of the Cadiz province which was named after an old Arab tower known as 'Ben Alup'. There is evidence of human presence since the prehistoric period with presence of Megaliths and cave art in the Tajo de las Figuras cave.

Benalup was conquered by the Arabs in the mid 13th century (1264) commencing to develop an important population nucleus as from the construction of a religious place during the 16th century known as the “chapel of the Old Houses”.

Durin the year 1933, Benalup caught the nation’s attention due to a tragic event during which a revolutionary revolt was endorsed with murders by the forces of the order back then.

Carnival
During the month of February or March you’ll be able to enjoy the Benalup carnival in the Cadiz province, with its traditional parade and costumes.

The Independence Festivity
Benalup previously belonged to Medina Sidonia until on the 20th of March 1991 it achieved its independence. It’s as from then when each year this event takes places with plenty of activities and live musical concerts.

Semana Santa (Holy Week)
During the months of March or April this religious festivity is celebrated.

Benalup Fair
The Fair of Benalup goes on for 5 days from the very moment they put the lights up until the fireworks that mark the closure of the festivities, and has traditional fair huts and mechanical funfair rides.
