Rota

History

Rota has been since prehistoric times a crossing point of different cultures and civilizations. There have been found remains of settlements of the civilization of Tartessos who called the place "Asta Regia"; this name remained until the arrival of the Romans who baptized the city "Speculum Rotae".

Through Rota also passed the Arab civilization who named the city Rabeta Ruta and the Christian civilization named it "Rotta", hence its current name.

Tourism in Rota

One of the main attractions are its beaches Rota, both urban and natural, and they have all the facilities you need.

In Rota you also find Costa Ballena, a resort that offers a great quality of life and where there are many shopping centres and three hotels.

Other activities

Besides the beaches of Rota, there are other tourist attractions that are worth to be visited, among which are outstanding:

Los Corrales
From Arab heritage, these are plots constructed at sea to catch fish during low tide as these are trapped inside. These constructions have been declared Natural Monument.

Park Laguna del Moral
A nice walk through the ancient lagoon Moral where you can see some wild animals such as ducks, geese, gulls...

Natural Park
La Almadraba In Avenida de la Diputacion you can enjoy an environment of pine forests and dunes. There are services, barbecue, playground and surveillance.

Festival Arranque Roteño
In August is organized a Flamenco Festival you can attend if you're in town.

Furthermore if you like good food, the typical dishes of Rota are known for their quality and are cooked with local produce. Outstanding are Berza, Urta Soup, Shrimp Tortilla and Tintilla de Rota.

How to get to Rota from Malaga

To get to Rota, head towards Algeciras via the Mediterranean Motorway and arriving in Los Barrios cross the Natural Park of Alcornocales as if heading to Puerto de Santa Maria (how to get to Puerto de Santa Maria) and bypassing the city you arrive at Rota Naval Base.
