San Pedro de Alcantara is one of Marbella’s most characterful districts. Just ten minutes’ drive from the centre, it moves at a gentler pace and has a genuine village feel that appeals especially to those looking for something a little different on the Costa del Sol. Blue Flag beaches, intriguing Roman remains and a lovely seafront promenade all come together here.
Founded in 1860 as an agricultural colony by the Marqués del Duero, San Pedro has kept its own identity despite the area’s tourist development. Today it’s an ideal base if you want to combine a day at the beach with a touch of culture, without having to plunge into the bustle of Puerto Banus or central Marbella.
The town’s festival in October is also one of the most authentic in the region. If you’re thinking of hiring a car, San Pedro makes an excellent starting point for exploring the western part of Malaga province at your own pace.
Right beside Guadalmina beach lie the remains of Roman baths dating from the 2nd or 3rd century AD. Although they are not heavily signposted, they are well worth a quick stop. Nearby you will also find the 16th-century watchtower known as the Torre Almenara de Las Bovedas.
One of the most important early Christian archaeological sites in Andalusia. Dating from the 4th to 6th centuries, it preserves the remains of a basilica and a necropolis. Set in a peaceful location close to the beach, it is ideal if you have an interest in ancient history.
A grand 19th-century manor house that now serves as the local council offices. It is one of the most attractive buildings in the centre and beautifully reflects the agricultural colony that gave birth to the town.
A former 19th-century sugar refinery that has been sensitively converted into a cultural centre. Today it hosts theatre, music and events, offering a fine example of how the region’s industrial heritage has been given new life.
One of the calmest beaches in the area, with Blue Flag status and a delightful seafront promenade shaded by eucalyptus and palm trees. Perfect for a stroll, a drink at one of the beach bars, or simply relaxing.
The town festival is usually held in mid-October and is one of the most heartfelt in the region. The main day falls on the 19th. Expect festival tents, live music, fireworks and a warm, family-friendly atmosphere. If you enjoy an authentic Andalusian festival without heavy tourism, this is an excellent choice.
From Malaga Airport the drive takes 45 to 55 minutes. The best route is via the AP-7 motorway heading west. Once you reach Marbella, San Pedro is just ten minutes further towards Estepona.
With your own car you can move around freely — head to the beach in the morning, lunch in Estepona and visit Benahavis in the afternoon without being tied to bus timetables.
